Should Children Have Chiropractic Care?
There are many reasons why children receive chiropractic care. We will begin with a few of the more common reasons and progress to the real reasons why we adjust children.
The most common reason parents seek care for their children is trauma; a fall, or an injury of some sort that has resulted in pain or discomfort. The chiropractor will take a history, perform a Chiropractic exam and possibly take an x-ray to determine if vertebral subluxation exists. Vertebrae are the bones of the spine that protect the spinal cord. The spinal cord is an extension of the brain and carries information from the brain to the body parts and back to the brain again. Subluxations result in static or interference along the nerves that carry this information and may or may not result in pain or symptoms. The adjustments that a chiropractor performs are designed to remove vertebral subluxation and restore normal nerve function to the body. If a child comes in with pain after a trauma or injury, many times this will resolve. This usually means there has been some restoration of normal nerve flow. The longer longer the body has subluxations the longer it has to adapt to this new "abnormal" pattern.
Another reason parents seek care for their children is to aid in the resolution of a disease or illness. This might be a child with ear infections, asthma, colic, or some other childhood illness. Let us first understand that Chiropractic does not cure any of the above conditions. What Chiropractic does is remove interference from the nervous system, either at the level of Vertebral Subluxations or at higher brain centers. This allows the brain to communicate with the body more effectively which results in a more fully functioning child.
The third reason parents bring their children in for Chiropractic care is that they understand that the nerve system controls and coordinates the function of all the systems in the body from the circulatory system to the respiratory system, from the digestive system to the immune system. Basically all cell function is controlled by the nerve system and the interference in the nervous system interferes with this communication. In order to allow their children to reach their fullest capability physically, mentally and emotionally, these informed parents choose Chiropractic. They know that Chiropractic allows their children the opportunity to express their life potential, whatever that may be, without the use of drugs or surgery. It allow the life force in the body to work uninhibited, to adapt to the environment, to fight naturally those toxins to which we are exposed on a daily basis.
