Losing 10%

Are you willing to give up 10%? 10% doesn't seem like much, does it? Yet it would take a test score from an A to a B, or worse yet from a C to a D. If you're a pilot leaving from KLIA and you misjudged your course to the Philippines by 10 degrees you could end up in the ocean to the North or the ocean to the South. What about a 10% error in blood alcohol content; it could mean the difference between being drunk and sober. Missing the crosswalk by 10% wouldn't be so bad, if there wasn't a child crossing. Would you be willing to take 10% off your lifespan? For women that would be nearly 8 years and for men nearly 7 years.

Think about what drugs do. Current medical research is reporting that a subtle decrease of people's mental and physical performance of 10% is acceptable! The slight (10%) reduction in dexterity and attention has been linked to a prescription drug that most deem harmless. Surprisingly, more that 4 million Americans take this drug and it has been in use for over 10 years.

Some studies have found that those who use this drug seem more likely to die in tragedies such as car accidents and suicides. They are now giving psychological tests to people taking this drug to see if there is a link! The bad news is that researchers are convinced the benefit of the drug outweighs the hazards. "We don't know if this affects people in the way they conduct their lives," says Dr. Matthew Muldoon of the University of Pittsburgh, who led the study.

Let us discuss the choices we have as humans, with the ability to choose.

> Continue as we have been and take no responsibility for our well-being until it's too late, then search for the magic pill or cure.

>> Begin to make changes in our lifestyle at whatever age we choose to accept responsibility. Realize that whatever damage has been done may be permanent, but that we may be able to prevent or slow new damage.

>>> Teach our children of the need for a healthy lifestyle so that this self-destructive trend we are in the midst of my cease to perpetuate itself in the years to come. Then perhaps they won't be forced to live at 90% instead of 100%.

These are all acceptable choices. We are faced with these and many others each day. These choices could include nutrition, water, exercise, mental or social issues. General health requires our constant attention. What is important to note is that we are responsible for our own well-being. It is our responsibility to assume the role of caretaker, first for ourselves, as examples to our children, and second for our families and friends.

You have taken a very important step in accepting ownership of your Wellness by seeking chiropractic care. Chiropractic is a natural approach to the helping the body restore itself to normal. A healthy nerve system allows the body to adapt to its environment. It's what allows you to digest properly, exchange carbon dioxide for oxygen, sweat when you're too hot.

Recent studies have shown that 45 mmHg pressure on a spinal nerve can reduce the information being sent to or from the brain by 60% in as little as 30 minutes. This pressure is equivalent to the amount of pressure your heart exerts at rest or between beats. If you remove that pressure in a short time the nerve can resume normal function; however if your leave that pressure on for more than a couple of hours the damage can be permanent. One of the reasons our chiropractor recommends regular checkups for you and your family is to help prevent permanent damage to your nerve system. You could even have less that optimum lifestyle habits and this amazing body, with its Innate (inborn) ability to heal, will adapt and self-correct as long as it has no static or interference.
